Date: Tue Sep 08 00:16:23 2009 An aggressive coyote stalked my (on leash) dog and I today on a trail behind Tunnel Mtn down from Douglas Fir Resort for over 30 minutes. After noticing it, we wound up the trail toward the Industrial Playground climbing area, where the coyote continued to advance on us. Looking as large as I could, making aggressive sounds and even throwing rocks did not deter the coyote. It was large and blond and followed us til the bitter end - even continuing behind us at close range (20 m) out of the treed area and crossing the field by the utility building (behind the resort) close to where the car was parked. A very unnerving walk. Always be prepared. Report Wildlife Sightings: Provincial Lands: 591-7755. Banff National Park: 762-1470 Bow Valley Bear Summary 2009-09-04 11:00:00

Date: Mon Apr 27 14:06:47 2009 Hello All, I am a fellow Trailex user who has had a couple of conversations with other Trailex users about this issue. We think we know what may have happened. Our guess is that another Trailex member signed up to MyLife and inadvertently allowed it to send an email invitation to everyone in their address book. Because the Trailex email address was in their address book, the invitation was passed along to us. If this is what happened, our addresses have not been compromised and I think it is unlikely that we will receive any future messages from MyLife. It looks like it was a blip. (Fortunately!) Report Wildlife Sightings: Provincial Lands: 591-7755. Banff National Park: 762-1470 Bow Valley Summary 2007-07-15 10:00:00
Date: Fri Jul 27 10:59:12 2007 Re-posted for Jay Honeyman... BEAR SUMMARY FOR THE BOW VALLEY (Banff National Park to Bow Valley Provincial Park) For the week of July 15 to 22, 2007 The following summary is based upon a compilation of bear information provided by government agencies and unconfirmed sightings reported by the public over the last week. It is by no means intended to be used as a real time, complete record of where bears are in the valley. BEARS CAN BE ENCOUNTERED ANYWHERE, ANYTIME! Be aware of your surroundings, know how to reduce the likelihood of encounters, and be prepared should an encounter take place. Always use caution by paying attention to signs of bear activity such as scats, tracks, and diggings. Make lots of noise while hiking; hike in groups when possible; carry pepper spray; and obey closures. Education Tidbit Grizzly bears have started to move down into the valley bottoms from higher elevations to take advantage of ripening berries. These foods include Buffaloberry, Saskatoon, Wolfwillow and Dogwood. Black bears are also searching for similar foods. Bear Activity Trends Bear sightings have occurred on both the north and south sides of the Bow Valley. Almost all of these sightings have occurred in the lower elevation areas of the valley, many along the Bow River. Black bears with cubs have been observed in the Silvertip/ Eagle Terrace and Bow Valley Provincial Park Zones. Grizzly bear sightings have occurred in the Silvertip, Exshaw/ Lac Des Arcs, YMCA Location Zones. Bears appear to be most active at dawn and dusk, opting to find cooler, shaded areas to bed down during the heat of the day. Important Notes Be aware of areas that have berry bushes and look for evidence of bears feeding on berries (broken branches, clusters of berries lying on the ground and scat with berries in it). There are vegetation management programs presently underway in the valley to remove natural attractants, primarily buffaloberry from developed areas. This is an attempt to encourage bears to use less developed areas away from facilities. Bear Cautions/ Closures Please report all bear sightings to 591 7755. For current postings of Bear Warnings and Closures please visit http://tprc.alberta.ca/parks/kananaskis/trailreport.aspx Always be prepared. Report Wildlife Sightings: Provincial Lands: 591-7755. Date: Sun Jul 22 16:22:42 2007 I opened my back door this morning and startled a young mule deer doe that sought refuge beside my house last night. She had a badly broken right hind leg (a compound fracture with the bone sticking out). I immediately called Fish and Wildlife, but they weren't able to make it here for a couple of hours. By that time, we couldn't find her. Please keep an eye out for this badly injured deer and call the Fish and Wildlife emergency line at 591-7755 if you see her. Thanks! Always be prepared. Date: Sun Jul 22 10:55:21 2007 Large Cougar spotted on the property on Saturday night around 9:30pm, right in front of cabins, scared away when seen by guests in Main Lodge - no incident - headed south into trees. We knew something was in the area, normally lots of Moose in meadow at that time, but last night almost nothing, just after cougar sighting, group of 7 Elk seen heading north on opposite side of meadow at a very fast pace. Moose back this morning, hopefully indicating that cougar is elsewhere - Parks informed. Banff National Park: 762-1470 Elbow Lake, Kananaskis July 20, 2007 - 18:00
Date: Sun Jul 22 10:42:52 2007 We were heading back to the Elbow Lake parking lot after coming from an out and back trip to Tombstone Lakes. 1.5 kms from Elbow Lake we ran into two men heading in the opposite direction. They warned us that a 2-3 year old grizzly was between the parking lot and Elbow Lake. They said they ran into it but it wasn't interested in them. They just waited for it to pass by and continued on. They told us it'd probably be gone by the time we got there. As we approached the bridge crossing the stream just prior to Elbow Lake, on the return, the grizzly was 20 feet in front of us. So, it was heading up the valley towards Tombstone Lakes. We backed up slowly and it wasn't interested in us. It kept on searching the foliage. We skirted off through the rough scrub towards the pine tree line to give it space and us something to climb up in case. The grizzly kept walking on the trail towards Tombstone. It stood up and smelled in our direction a few times but that was it. It wasn't interested in us. When it had passed, we headed back down the trail to our car. We immediately reported it to the EMS station off Highway 40. So, beware of a young grizzly around the Tombstone/Elbow Lake area. Always be prepared. Date: Mon Jun 25 16:56:22 2007 This is posted for Douglas Maclean... This morning at about 6:45 am, just east of the park in Larch (beside the walk way) there was a large grizzly, dark brown colour, large hump feeding on dandelions. It was un-disturbed by my presence and my dog and myself backed off. The bear moved west along the fence lines of the houses towards the park feeding on more dandelions, took a huge poop on the park, and I believe has moved now into the Larch island area. I would advise walkers and hikers in the wooded area on the islands to be very wary, and although bikes are not allowed on that trail many use it, they should be careful too. And don't use ipods so you/they can hear something! Always be prepared. Report Wildlife Sightings: Provincial Lands: 591-7755. Banff National Park: 762-1470 Trail to Shadow Lake 2007-06-23 19:00:00

Date: Mon Aug 21 10:07:45 2006 My companion and I were biking out from Shadow Lake and were stopped by a group of six women from Calgary who warned us about a Mother Grizzly and 2 cubs coming up the trail. They group was on their way out also and said the bear had been following them and they had been retreating before the bears for about 1km. Rather than following them I think the bear family maybe didn't see the need to yeild the trail since the group of women were very eager to do so. While discussing things Momma and kids came around the corner at a steady walk and someone had the idea of leaving the trail so that's what we all did. We sat in a group on the high-side overlooking the trail and sang songs and otherwise made noise. After a while I checked down the trail and the Grizzly Family had abandoned the trail too. We developed a theory that the animals would have been very uncomfortable passing below us on the trail, under 8 people occupying the high ground so to speak. We resumed our journey mak ing much noise. Always be prepared. Report Wildlife Sightings: Provincial Lands: 591-7755. Banff National Park: 762-1470 Kananaskis and Banff 2006-08-16 11:00:00
