Back of Tunnel 2009-09-07 23:13:00

Date: Tue Sep 08 00:16:23 2009
From: Wanda Bogdane <bogdanew@xxxxxxxxxxx>

An aggressive coyote stalked my (on leash) dog and I today on a trail behind Tunnel Mtn down from
Douglas Fir Resort for over 30 minutes.

After noticing it, we wound up the trail toward the Industrial Playground climbing area, where the
coyote continued to advance on us. Looking as large as I could, making aggressive sounds and even
throwing rocks did not deter the coyote. It was large and blond and followed us til the bitter end
- even continuing behind us at close range (20 m) out of the treed area and crossing the field by
the utility building (behind the resort) close to where the car was parked. A very unnerving walk.

Was out doing a dusk ride. About 300m before the exit onto the power line clearing on the Highline

Sorry for the late posting. We came across a young (~2 years old) Grizzly who was crossing the cut
line by dog lake. He then headed up the Highland trail. He showed no interest in us (2 adults &
toddler) and our 2 dogs.

Also, came saw some [fairly] fresh scat by Rundle Canal today (June 30). I have also come across
fresh scat in the woods behind Quarry Lake in the "meadow area" so there seems to be some activity

From: Kay Anderson <CanmoreAndersons@xxxxxxx>

We were walking our 2 dogs on leash on the new TSMV golfcourse that is under construction. We were
near the back lake and shed. Golf course workers had just come by and told us to be aware there
are coyotes with pups in the woods near the shed. We were already near that area and sure enough
one coyote aggressively came out towards us. We immediately starting walking away quickly over a
hill. The same coyote, or another, started to follow after us closely then finally sat down and
watched us walk away. This must be the same area of the course where the other dog attack was
reported. Keep your dogs on leash and avoid that area.

Saw two grizzly cubs on Saturday from trail going up Grizzly Peak - about 250 meters away. They
were down by Ripple Rock Creek, walking slowly and foraging. They were definitely curious and
'aware' of us. We kept our distance and walked back on trail and then climbed to a higher elevation
to watch where they were headed. We were going to turn around, but ended up being able to finish
the peak from a higher route when they were a long ways away and out of sight. No mama bear was
around, though the sheep overlooking the creek were watching carefully. A beautiful sight.

other Trailex users about this issue. We think we know what may have
happened.

Our guess is that another Trailex member signed up to MyLife and
inadvertently allowed it to send an email invitation to everyone in
their address book. Because the Trailex email address was in their
address book, the invitation was passed along to us.

If this is what happened, our addresses have not been compromised and I
think it is unlikely that we will receive any future messages from
MyLife. It looks like it was a blip. (Fortunately!)

Best regards,

Amy Krause

Over the past month our family has made a few hikes in the Horseshoe Trail area (near the ACC
clubhouse) and noted some recent bear sign, most notably at least to visits to a large fallen down
log that we nicknamed the "hide and seek log" a few years ago. A month ago half the bark was torn
off, and a few days ago the other half was torn off. Great paw prints nearby in February in recent
storm snow.

Grizzley with collar was in the meadow just before the summit climb. No fear of humans and several
people there saw it and some took pictures. We turned around when we discovered that we were

Large grizzly emerged from forest onto trail behind myself and two young girls. My daughter turned
around and spotted him following us. I moved the kids behind a large tree and turned to face the
bear and did not move. I had my bear spray drawn and ready to use. He ran towards us but quickly
turned and dashed into the woods. There was another hiking party on the trail at the time and we
all left the area immediately. I reported the incident to the gift shop at Johnston Canyon as well
as called it in to the wardens. As I was reporting the incident at the gift shop another woman came
in to report the same bear in the same spot. It was sitting in the trail and ran off when her group

Re-posted for Jay Honeyman...

BEAR SUMMARY FOR THE BOW VALLEY (Banff National Park to Bow Valley Provincial Park)
For the week of July 15 to 22, 2007

The following summary is based upon a compilation of bear information provided by government
agencies and unconfirmed sightings reported by the public over the last week. It is by no means
intended to be used as a real time, complete record of where bears are in the valley. BEARS CAN BE
ENCOUNTERED ANYWHERE, ANYTIME!

Be aware of your surroundings, know how to reduce the likelihood of encounters, and be prepared
should an encounter take place. Always use caution by paying attention to signs of bear activity
such as scats, tracks, and diggings. Make lots of noise while hiking; hike in groups when possible;
carry pepper spray; and obey closures.

Education Tidbit
Grizzly bears have started to move down into the valley bottoms from higher elevations to take
advantage of ripening berries. These foods include Buffaloberry, Saskatoon, Wolfwillow and Dogwood.
Black bears are also searching for similar foods.

Bear Activity Trends
Bear sightings have occurred on both the north and south sides of the Bow Valley. Almost all of
these sightings have occurred in the lower elevation areas of the valley, many along the Bow River.
Black bears with cubs have been observed in the Silvertip/ Eagle Terrace and Bow Valley Provincial
Park Zones. Grizzly bear sightings have occurred in the Silvertip, Exshaw/ Lac Des Arcs, YMCA
Location Zones. Bears appear to be most active at dawn and dusk, opting to find cooler, shaded
areas to bed down during the heat of the day.

Important Notes
Be aware of areas that have berry bushes and look for evidence of bears feeding on berries (broken
branches, clusters of berries lying on the ground and scat with berries in it).
There are vegetation management programs presently underway in the valley to remove natural
attractants, primarily buffaloberry from developed areas. This is an attempt to encourage bears to
use less developed areas away from facilities.

Bear Cautions/ Closures
Please report all bear sightings to 591 7755. For current postings of Bear Warnings and Closures
please visit http://tprc.alberta.ca/parks/kananaskis/trailreport.aspx

Large Cougar spotted on the property on Saturday night around 9:30pm,
right in front of cabins, scared away when seen by guests in Main Lodge
- no incident - headed south into trees. We knew something was in the
area, normally lots of Moose in meadow at that time, but last night
almost nothing, just after cougar sighting, group of 7 Elk seen heading
north on opposite side of meadow at a very fast pace. Moose back this
morning, hopefully indicating that cougar is elsewhere - Parks informed.

Date: Sun Jul 22 10:42:52 2007
From: Dave Cwynar <dave.cwynar@xxxxxxxxx>

We were heading back to the Elbow Lake parking lot after coming from an out and back trip to
Tombstone Lakes. 1.5 kms from Elbow Lake we ran into two men heading in the opposite direction.
They warned us that a 2-3 year old grizzly was between the parking lot and Elbow Lake. They said
they ran into it but it wasn't interested in them. They just waited for it to pass by and
continued on. They told us it'd probably be gone by the time we got there.

As we approached the bridge crossing the stream just prior to Elbow Lake, on the return, the
grizzly was 20 feet in front of us. So, it was heading up the valley towards Tombstone Lakes.

We backed up slowly and it wasn't interested in us. It kept on searching the foliage. We skirted
off through the rough scrub towards the pine tree line to give it space and us something to climb
up in case.

The grizzly kept walking on the trail towards Tombstone. It stood up and smelled in our direction
a few times but that was it. It wasn't interested in us.

When it had passed, we headed back down the trail to our car.

We immediately reported it to the EMS station off Highway 40.

So, beware of a young grizzly around the Tombstone/Elbow Lake area.

Mother grizzly was back on property today. Cubs weren't with her but they usually stick fairly
close. She mosed around the parking lot, and into the trees right beside the chalet door/balcony -
lucky there wasn't a little kid coming out of the chalet at the time. Earlier I had hiked up the
lower half of the Norquay ski-out behind the hotel and there is an adbundance of rippening buffalo
berries and I'm sure these ones will stick around so take care.

the north side of Elbow Lake about 60 metres up from the trail. Ignored the campers on the other
side of the lake. Caught and curb-stomped a gopher up there then wandered up and west leaving us
alone.

2 of us were riding on the Minnewanka lake trail last night. We had just made it out almost to the
top of the uphill in the scree slopes in the first 2-3k past the bridge over the cascade. We were
talking and standing right in the middle of the trail when a medium size grizzli came walking
towards us on the trail over the crest of the hill about 100 feet away. It showed not sign of fear,
surprise, conern or bother and just kept coming. We backed off, turn around and road away.
We thought it was a rather unusual behavior and reported it to parks.

This is posted for Douglas Maclean...

This morning at about 6:45 am,
just east of the park in Larch (beside the walk way) there was a large grizzly, dark brown colour,
large hump feeding on dandelions. It was un-disturbed by my presence and my dog and myself backed
off. The bear moved west along the fence lines of the houses towards the park feeding on more
dandelions, took a huge poop on the park, and I believe has moved now into the Larch island area. I
would advise walkers and hikers in the wooded area on the islands to be very wary, and although
bikes are not allowed on that trail many use it, they should be careful too. And don't use ipods so
you/they can hear something!

A mother black bear with three tiny cubs came right toward me on the first kilometer of the trail.
When I saw them, they were about 50 meters away. She only noticed me when I started talking to her
and then changed her direction to steer clear of me. I then continued on the trail, which led away
from her and the cubs. When returning about three hours later, I saw a black bear again on the
trail, about 100 meters away and not far from where I had the previous sighting. Not seeing cubs
this time, it might have been another bear. Instead of continuing along the trail, I took a (rather
steep) shortcut to the road from that point to avoid a meeting.

My neighbor was running up from the bottom of Georgetown trail at the Nordic Centre when she came
upon a large male (not positive on sex) cougar sitting on the trail. He did not run away, but
rather sat and looked right at her. Her large German Shepard ran between her and the cougar. This
did not scare the cougar initially, but eventually the cougar fled. It has been reported to Fish
and Wildlife and they stated that they have had a couple of sightings at Nordic Centre and around
the reservoir.

My companion and I were biking out from Shadow Lake and were stopped by a group of six women from
Calgary who warned us about a Mother Grizzly and 2 cubs coming up the trail. They group was on
their way out also and said the bear had been following them and they had been retreating before
the bears for about 1km. Rather than following them I think the bear family maybe didn't see the
need to yeild the trail since the group of women were very eager to do so. While discussing things
Momma and kids came around the corner at a steady walk and someone had the idea of leaving the
trail so that's what we all did. We sat in a group on the high-side overlooking the trail and sang
songs and otherwise made noise. After a while I checked down the trail and the Grizzly Family had
abandoned the trail too. We developed a theory that the animals would have been very uncomfortable
passing below us on the trail, under 8 people occupying the high ground so to speak. We resumed our
journey mak
 ing much noise.

While riding on Stoney Trail (between Jewel downhill and Skogan climb) a mother griz and 2 cubs
sighted at close range (50m). The cubs ran away while mom stood and watched us (2 people) retreat
quietly. We regrouped with 2 others after retreating 400m back on the trail, waited 5 minutes, then
rode past the location as a noisy group of 4. The bears were not seen at this time. The location
was on the section of trail approximately 4km north of the Nakiska road, where the otherwise open
trail makes a short sidetrip through trees and lush vegetation.

** Note: The lead rider was making frequent loud yells to avoid surprising bears around blind
corners. This bears reaction (curiousity, no aggression) when sighted indicated to us that she had
heard the yells and thus was not agitated when we arrived. **

The bear was moving west and was probably trying to cross the Continental Divide at the col between
Mt Northover and Warrior Mtn for more abundant food sources on the other side. But later we
discovered the bear took a wrong south turn toward Mangin glacier as we crossed its tracks on the
