Horseshoe Trail Feb & March 2008

Date: Tue Mar 25 22:17:36 2008
From: Tom Wolfe <twolfe@xxxxxxxxxxx>

Over the past month our family has made a few hikes in the Horseshoe Trail area (near the ACC
clubhouse) and noted some recent bear sign, most notably at least to visits to a large fallen down
log that we nicknamed the "hide and seek log" a few years ago. A month ago half the bark was torn
off, and a few days ago the other half was torn off. Great paw prints nearby in February in recent
storm snow.

Tom Wolfe

From: Gord Olliver <gordibis@xxxxxxx>

On Sunday, 2 hikers reported seeing a Grizzly bear ambling down the trail ahead of them,
approximately 2 km from the Goat Creek Trailhead, East end of Rundle. The hikers caught up to it
twice, both times it stood up and took a few steps toward them, then continued down the trail.
Mountain bikers then caught up to the bear again. The bear ran away briefly from the second biker
to catch up to him; but stayed on the trail for at least several km. This bear did not appear
agressive; but also did not show fear.

Large grizzly emerged from forest onto trail behind myself and two young girls. My daughter turned
around and spotted him following us. I moved the kids behind a large tree and turned to face the
bear and did not move. I had my bear spray drawn and ready to use. He ran towards us but quickly
turned and dashed into the woods. There was another hiking party on the trail at the time and we
all left the area immediately. I reported the incident to the gift shop at Johnston Canyon as well
as called it in to the wardens. As I was reporting the incident at the gift shop another woman came
in to report the same bear in the same spot. It was sitting in the trail and ran off when her group
approached.

Bow Valley Summary 2007-07-15 10:00:00

Re-posted for Jay Honeyman...

BEAR SUMMARY FOR THE BOW VALLEY (Banff National Park to Bow Valley Provincial Park)
For the week of July 15 to 22, 2007

The following summary is based upon a compilation of bear information provided by government
agencies and unconfirmed sightings reported by the public over the last week. It is by no means
intended to be used as a real time, complete record of where bears are in the valley. BEARS CAN BE
ENCOUNTERED ANYWHERE, ANYTIME!

Be aware of your surroundings, know how to reduce the likelihood of encounters, and be prepared
should an encounter take place. Always use caution by paying attention to signs of bear activity
such as scats, tracks, and diggings. Make lots of noise while hiking; hike in groups when possible;
carry pepper spray; and obey closures.

Education Tidbit
Grizzly bears have started to move down into the valley bottoms from higher elevations to take
advantage of ripening berries. These foods include Buffaloberry, Saskatoon, Wolfwillow and Dogwood.
Black bears are also searching for similar foods.

Bear Activity Trends
Bear sightings have occurred on both the north and south sides of the Bow Valley. Almost all of
these sightings have occurred in the lower elevation areas of the valley, many along the Bow River.
Black bears with cubs have been observed in the Silvertip/ Eagle Terrace and Bow Valley Provincial
Park Zones. Grizzly bear sightings have occurred in the Silvertip, Exshaw/ Lac Des Arcs, YMCA
Location Zones. Bears appear to be most active at dawn and dusk, opting to find cooler, shaded
areas to bed down during the heat of the day.

Important Notes
Be aware of areas that have berry bushes and look for evidence of bears feeding on berries (broken
branches, clusters of berries lying on the ground and scat with berries in it).
There are vegetation management programs presently underway in the valley to remove natural
attractants, primarily buffaloberry from developed areas. This is an attempt to encourage bears to
use less developed areas away from facilities.

Bear Cautions/ Closures
Please report all bear sightings to 591 7755. For current postings of Bear Warnings and Closures

I was running on the paved road that goes out to Interlakes at about 8:45am. Just before the
turnoff down into the campground, but on the opposite side hill a grizzly was feeding. It was
cinnnamon/brown and didn't look very old to me. Perhaps about 2-3 years old. I saw it first from
about 60 metres. I stopped, backed up and left the area. The bear may have seen me and went down
into the ditch. Before I had a chance to report the sighting the K-country folks were on site.

sticking out). I immediately called Fish and Wildlife, but they weren't able to make it here for a

Cougar at Mount Engadine Lodge

Date: Sun Jul 22 10:55:21 2007
From: chris@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Large Cougar spotted on the property on Saturday night around 9:30pm,
right in front of cabins, scared away when seen by guests in Main Lodge
- no incident - headed south into trees. We knew something was in the
area, normally lots of Moose in meadow at that time, but last night
almost nothing, just after cougar sighting, group of 7 Elk seen heading
north on opposite side of meadow at a very fast pace. Moose back this
morning, hopefully indicating that cougar is elsewhere - Parks informed.

Elbow Lake, Kananaskis July 20, 2007 - 18:00

Date: Sun Jul 22 10:42:52 2007
From: Dave Cwynar <dave.cwynar@xxxxxxxxx>

We were heading back to the Elbow Lake parking lot after coming from an out and back trip to
Tombstone Lakes. 1.5 kms from Elbow Lake we ran into two men heading in the opposite direction.
They warned us that a 2-3 year old grizzly was between the parking lot and Elbow Lake. They said
they ran into it but it wasn't interested in them. They just waited for it to pass by and
continued on. They told us it'd probably be gone by the time we got there.

As we approached the bridge crossing the stream just prior to Elbow Lake, on the return, the
grizzly was 20 feet in front of us. So, it was heading up the valley towards Tombstone Lakes.

We backed up slowly and it wasn't interested in us. It kept on searching the foliage. We skirted
off through the rough scrub towards the pine tree line to give it space and us something to climb
up in case.

The grizzly kept walking on the trail towards Tombstone. It stood up and smelled in our direction
a few times but that was it. It wasn't interested in us.

When it had passed, we headed back down the trail to our car.

We immediately reported it to the EMS station off Highway 40.

So, beware of a young grizzly around the Tombstone/Elbow Lake area.

Mother grizzly was back on property today. Cubs weren't with her but they usually stick fairly
close. She mosed around the parking lot, and into the trees right beside the chalet door/balcony -
lucky there wasn't a little kid coming out of the chalet at the time. Earlier I had hiked up the
lower half of the Norquay ski-out behind the hotel and there is an adbundance of rippening buffalo
berries and I'm sure these ones will stick around so take care.

Startled a large male black bear along the Middle Sister Access road in the Stewart Creek area of
Canmore, about 500m past the gate. Bear loped off for a few meters, then turned and stood on rear
legs. No sign of aggression, just curiosity. Note that the buffaloberries are starting to ripen
along valley bottoms, and that bears will soon be coming down to feed. Make sure to take note where
berries are present, and take greater precautions in such places.
